Overview

Exhaust Material: Aluminized Steel is a type of mild steel coated with an aluminum-silicon alloy. The silicon helps the aluminum adhere to the steel, providing resistance to corrosion.

Identification

Aluminized steel can be identified by its light gray color, which may appear shiny compared to mild steel, though not as shiny as stainless steel or chrome. It is also magnetic, so it can be checked with a magnet.

Pros and Cons

  • Cost: Aluminized steel is more expensive than mild steel but much cheaper than stainless steel. It is also easier to work with than stainless steel.
  • Corrosion Resistance: The aluminized coating protects the steel from rust. However, if the coating is scratched or damaged, the underlying metal can rust. Areas that scrape against curbs or are hit by rocks are prone to rust, as are welded joints.
  • Rusting from Inside Out: A common issue with aluminized steel exhaust systems is rusting from the inside due to moisture collection. Short trips, where the exhaust does not get hot enough to evaporate moisture, can exacerbate this problem.

Longevity

  • Moderate Climates: In moderate climates, aluminized steel exhaust systems may last 3-5 years on a daily driver.
  • Dry Climates: In dry climates, these systems can last 8 years or more.

In summary, while aluminized steel offers good corrosion resistance and affordability compared to stainless steel, its durability can be compromised by scratches and internal moisture buildup.
